What Is An EICR?

An electrical installation condition report (EICR) is an electrical inspection and test of your fixed wiring to assess the condition and compliance of your existing wiring withing your premises. An EICR is the best way to check for any issues which may be happening behind the scenes and rectify them before they cause any problems in the future. At IPF electrical our engineers have vast up to date knowledge of current wiring regulations, to ensure you electrical safety, compliance, and peace of mind.

What Does The Fixed Wire Test Entail?

An EICR test will assess the condition of your electrical systems and evaluate how efficiently they are working, paying particular attention to any issues or defects. As part of the test we look at the conditions of the electrics against the UK standard for safety. The specific elements of the test include:-

  • Complete visual inspections to ensure the fixtures and of sound condition
  • Insulation resistance tests to ensure the cables insulation is of sound condition
  • System earthing arrangement to ensure they are satisfactory and compliant
  • Signs of loose connections which may cause overheating or fire
  • Earth integrity by completing earth fault loop impedance tests
  • Ring main testing to confirm the continuity of circuit ring mains
  • All our reports are issued electronically within 5 working days of completion

Is There A Legal Requirement?

At this time there is now legal requirements, it is outlined in legislation the responsibility that landlords and business owners have to their employees or tenants. Therefore an EICR is required to best protect these individuals. Most EICR certificates are only valid for up to 10 years, so if you are in a position where you are thinking of selling a commercial unit or property then it is best advised to have one carried out beforehand.

Also most insurance companies now require business premises to have electrical tests done to ensure the safety, integrity, and compliance in case of needing to make a claim.

Electrical testing is required at periodic intervals as follows –

  • 10 years for a domestic installation
  • 5 years for a commercial installation
  • 3 years for industrial premises
  • 3 years for caravans
  • 1 year for swimming pools
